Lacquer painting

Vinh Phuc province has the « son » tree which exceptional, hgh value and welknown.
According to ancient documents, as early as the 18th century, people in Nam Ngu District in Thang Long (Hanoi) specialised in making lacquerware products. There was a daughter of one local craftman named Dao Thi Nhieu. This beautiful lady had a talent in lacquer painting, later became the Queen, and gave birth to King Canh Hung .

The painting craftmenship has two differetn types : Oil painting (scanned with a layer of oil to increase durability and beauty), and laquer painting came later on.. both of the arts used the same raw material , the Son’s wax. This wax would be mixed with the betel oil so the glossy effect could not be altered. If this material then mixed with pine resin, and then rubbed it with pumice and the picture and colors will be visible. In the old days, the palette of lacquer painting includes only the color of canhgian (cockroach wings), then (black), son (red).

Throughout the study of the artists, the color shceme of lacquer has been enriched . The colors is much richer, yet suttle under many diferent layers, the gold and silver dust was applied in an uneven manner to create the depth and the mystical effect.The creation is done in several stages, after each of them, the lacquer dries and only then can one start the following stage.
